When you're transferring a vehicle title in Texas, it's generally not necessary to have it notarized.

For a standard private sale, the process is straightforward. The seller needs to sign and complete the "seller" section on the back of the title, which includes filling in the date of the sale and the odometer reading. The buyer will also sign the title.

While the title itself doesn't need to be notarized, there are a few specific situations where you would need a notarized document:

Vehicle as a Gift: If a vehicle is being transferred as a gift, both the donor and recipient must complete and have the Affidavit of Motor Vehicle Gift Transfer (Form 14-317) notarized.
Heirship: If you're transferring ownership of a vehicle from a deceased owner, you'll likely need a notarized Affidavit of Heirship for a Motor Vehicle (Form VTR-262).

The new owner is required by law to complete the title transfer at a county tax office within 30 days of the sale.
