What ID Do I Need to Get My Documents Notarized in Houston?

Hey there, H-Town! Whether you’re trying to close on a new home in the Heights, getting medical power of attorney documents ready for a loved one at the Texas Medical Center, or finalizing business contracts over in Katy, one thing remains the same: you’re going to need the right identification before a Notary Public can stamp your paperwork.

As a Houston notary, one of the most common questions I get is, "What kind of ID do I need to bring to our appointment?"

Under Texas law (per the Secretary of State), a notary’s primary job is to verify your identity to prevent fraud. To do that, we need to see a very specific type of identification.

Here is a quick guide to what IDs work, what won't, and how you can make sure your notarization goes smoothly.

What Makes an ID Acceptable in Texas?

In the Lone Star State, your identification must meet a few mandatory criteria. It needs to be:

  1. Current (not expired).

  2. Issued by a government agency (state or federal).

  3. Contain your photograph and signature.

  4. Match the name on the document you are signing.

Top 4 Acceptable IDs for Houstonians

If you are meeting up with a mobile notary or stopping by an office here in town, any of these standard IDs will get the job done:

  • Texas Driver’s License or ID Card: Issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). This is the most common and easiest ID we use.

  • U.S. Passport or Passport Card: Always a great option, especially if you're in between renewing your driver's license.

  • Out-of-State Driver’s License: Visiting Houston for business or just moved to town from across state lines? As long as your out-of-state license is unexpired and has your photo and signature, Texas notaries can accept it.

  • U.S. Military ID: Official government-issued military identification cards.

What Can’t We Accept? (The Dealbreakers)

To save you a trip or an awkward conversation when we meet up at your local coffee shop or office, please note that Texas notaries cannot accept the following as primary proof of identity:

  • Expired IDs: If it's expired, Texas law says it’s no longer valid for notarization (even if the picture looks exactly like you!).

  • Work Badges or Student IDs: Even if it’s a high-security badge from a major oil and gas company on the Energy Corridor or a student ID from UH or Rice, it doesn't count as an official government-issued ID.

  • Social Security Cards or Birth Certificates: While these prove who you are on paper, they don't have your photograph or signature, so we can't use them to verify your identity on the spot.

What If My Name Doesn't Match Perfectly?

Life happens—marriages, divorces, or just a typo on a legal document can cause a mismatch. Your name on the document should substantially match the name on your ID. If you recently got married and your ID has your maiden name but your document has your married name, bring along your legal marriage certificate or divorce decree so we can bridge the gap legally.

Don't Have a Valid ID? We Have an Option.

If your ID is expired or lost, don't panic. In Texas, we can use Credible Witnesses to verify your identity. This means you must bring along one or two people who do have valid government IDs, who know you personally, and who can swear under oath to the notary that you are who you say you are.
